Little Place of Solitude

Little Place of Solitude

Today, I want to share an incredibly personal and serene experience I had at Little Ridge Park in Cumming, Georgia.

A Hidden Gem

Nestled on the south side of Lake Lanier, Little Ridge Park is a beautiful escape into nature. With its winding trails, picturesque views of the lake, and tranquil woodland surroundings, this park offers a perfect getaway from the hustle and bustle of daily life.

As I walked along the trail, the rustling leaves and the gentle waves of the lake created a soothing soundtrack, making it easy to lose myself in the beauty of the moment. The air was fresh, and the natural scenery was breathtaking – a true testament to the park’s untouched charm.

Finding Tranquility Amidst a Troubled Past

While Little Ridge Park is undoubtedly a place of peace and natural beauty, it also holds a more somber significance for me. Cumming, Georgia, like many places in the South, has a complex history, particularly when it comes to race relations. It's no secret that there was a time when this area, and others like it, were known as sundown towns – places where Black individuals and other people of color were not welcome after dark.

For many of us, these historical shadows can cast a long-lasting sense of unease. However, I believe it's important for us to reclaim these spaces and create new, positive memories in them. Our presence here, in places that once felt forbidden, is a powerful statement of resilience and a step towards healing.

A Safe Space for Reflection

As I spent my day at Little Ridge Park, I found a sense of peace that I hadn't anticipated. It was empowering to walk these trails and enjoy the beauty of the lake, knowing that this space is now open and welcoming to everyone. The park's serene atmosphere offered a perfect setting for reflection, allowing me to process the past and appreciate the progress we've made.

One of the most grounding moments was when I took off my shoes and placed my feet in the sand. I breathed deeply, feeling the connection to the earth and the air around me. It was a powerful reminder that our community once breathed this same air, and now, in this moment, I was reclaiming it with every breath.

I felt safe here. The park is well-maintained, with clear signage and friendly visitors, making it an inviting spot for anyone looking to enjoy nature. Whether you're here for a quiet walk, a picnic by the lake, or simply to take in the stunning views, Little Ridge Park provides a sanctuary for all.
